Effect of Cutting Type and IBA Concentration on Propagation of Passion Fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims)

Abstract

Thisstudywascarriedoutintwoconsecutiveseasons(2022and2023)attheAgriculturalResearchCenterHorticultural Research Institute,Giza,Egypt,wheredifferentconcentrationsofindolebutyricacid(IBA)wereappliedtorootingabilityandleafgrowthofcuttings.WeinvestigatedtheeffectonthepromotionofVegetativepropagationbypassionfruitcuttings.Thesecuttingsarefromhealthyfifth-yearmothertreesalreadygrownintheHorticulturalLaboratorynurseryattheAgriculturalResearchCenterinGiza,Egypt.Thecutlengthwas10-14cm,3knots,thetrunkthicknesswas5-7mm,anditwasmadebycuttingtheupperpartobliquelyandflatteningthelowerpart.Cuttings,ontheotherhand,arecleanedbyremovingtheoldleaves,exceptfortwonewleaves.Rapidlydipthebottom(1-2cm)ofthecuttingsintovariousconcentrationsofIBA(0,1000,2000,and3000ppm)for15-20seconds.Cuttingsplantedinmediumthencontainedamixtureofsoil + sand + FYM (1:1:1v/v/v)ina40x60cmplasticboxata45-degree angle.Thesecuttingswereplantedtwice(MarchandAugustinbothseasons)inagreenhouseunderamistirrigationsystemandautomaticallysprayedwithwatereveryhourfor5minutes.Theresultsshowedthatcuttingstreatedwith3000ppmIBAandplantedinMarchhadthehighestsurvivalrateinbothseasons,withimprovedrootnumber,rootlength,andshootandleafnumbers.
